Located on the slopes of Mount Subasio, Assisi is the city of Saint Francis. Its medieval historic center follows the lines of ancient Roman roads; overlooking Piazza del Comune are the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Palazzo dei Priori, and the Temple of Minerva.
Famous landmarks include the Franciscan Sacred Convent with its Basilica extensively frescoed by Giotto; the 13th-century Church of Saint Clare; the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with frescoes by Pinturicchio; and the Rocca Maggiore, set on a hill overlooking the city. The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli houses at its center the Chapel of the Porziuncola, where the Franciscan Order was founded, the Chapel of the Transitus, originally the cell where Saint Francis died, and the Chapel of the Rose Garden.
A few kilometers away, visitors can also explore the Franciscan hermitage of the Carceri, built by Saint Bernardino of Siena in the 15th century. Assisi, with its historic center, the Basilica of Saint Francis, and other Franciscan sites, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
